Networking is a crucial aspect of building relationships and expanding your professional circle. Social media and networking platforms like LinkedIn make it effortless to do so. With networking being available at our fingertips, building career connections has never been so easy. However, it's important to approach networking in a way that is genuine and respectful, so you don't come across as...well, a stalker. Whether it is a DM on Instagram or a comment on LinkedIn, you can network effectively without being perceived as another spam account to report. 

Be Genuine: The key to successful networking is being authentic and sincere. Approach conversations with a genuine interest in the other person and what they do. Avoid coming off as self-promotional or solely interested in what others can do for you. Instead of sending that promotional flyer alone, initiate an introduction about what you believe the recipient can take away from the experience that you want them to be a part of.

i.e., “Hello, I would like to personally invite you to our upcoming photography workshop! Considering your creative background, I believe that this event will be a great experience with some tips and tricks you would be interested in possessing.”

Show that you have something valuable to offer and are not solely focused on what you can gain.

Be Respectful of People's Time: Direct messaging via social media can be overwhelming and potentially bothersome, especially on platforms used for decompression during downtime. Avoid monopolizing someone's time by keeping your conversations concise and allowing them to connect with other individuals. If you feel your pitch may go over a few sentences, consider sending them an email instead.

Respect their boundaries and make it clear that you value their time.

Follow Up With GratitudeAfter meeting with your connection, it is a great idea to follow up. Send a personalized message expressing your gratitude for the meeting and that they even took the time to reach back out. 

i.e.,  “Hi, Zack. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me this past week and connecting me to your boss. I gained advice that I can utilize throughout my career. It is very much appreciated.”

Whenever someone provides you with help, support, or guidance, make sure to express thanks. This allows for future collaborations to flourish.

Focus on Building Relationships, Not Just Contacts: Networking shouldn’t solely be about collecting business cards or making superficial connections. Instead, focus on cultivating meaningful relationships. Follow up with individuals, invite them for a coffee or lunch, and nurture the connection.

Networking is an art that requires finesse and genuine interest in others. By approaching networking with authenticity, respect, and a focus on building relationships, you can establish a strong nexus and be seen as a promising relationship. Remember, networking is about creating mutually beneficial connections and helping each other succeed.
