Find your Passion
If you are feeling unsettled or stagnant in your job, maybe it’s time to make some changes. Figuring out what that looks like may seem like a complicated math equation, especially if you don’t know what your passions are. Joyce asks one simple question: “What gets you out of bed every day?” Asking yourself this question helps to determine the driving force that allows you to continue to work the same job every day. Whether it be money, flexible scheduling, or the people that you work with, this self-inquiry can give you an idea of what you look for in a career. Also, it can be your initiative to launch yourself into the job that molds into the career of your dreams (even if you don’t know what exactly that looks like right now).
Every Step Counts
Once you’ve figured out what your passions are, it will allow you to carefully consider the next position in your career journey. According to Joyce, “a job is a role or a function that comes with a title and pay; a career is something more [like] a longer endeavor that may consist of a series of jobs.” She goes even further to say, “think of a job as a stepping stone in your career or a fork [in] the road that might cause you to pivot and take a different route”. The next job that you take on should be one that encourages those passions that you want to fulfill to create a long-lasting profession.
Trust the Process
If you find yourself still jumping from job to job, don’t be discouraged. “Millennials and Gen Zs are known to be [the] job-hopping generations. Different think tanks like the World Economic Forum and the Institute for the Future even claim that 85% of the jobs in 2030 are not yet even imagined so they expect these generations to be switching not only their jobs but also their careers… at least three times in their lifetimes”, announces Joyce! As long as innovations are being made, more career opportunities will become available. It’s like being a kid in a candy store going down every aisle and being told to just pick one thing! Every job may not look the same but as long as it keeps you on a consistent path of your passions and what makes you happy, that is the ultimate goal. Your career journey is exactly that- a JOURNEY!
